I used to wonder why “the matt” typed things out the way he did. I think now, as I hold my (finally) sleeping baby in one arm, I am getting a better understanding.
The drive home from the hospital was both wonderful and awful. It was wonderful for the coolest, most obvious reason: we’re bringing dd home! But it was awful for a number of reasons. The biggest being the disconnection from her. Rear facing car-seats are the worst invention for new parents. Since newborns don’t talk much, we were constantly checking her. She looked so uncomfortable, but I knew she was safe.
After a quick stop at a nursery to pick out a plant for her, and a quick cleanup at g&g’s1, it was time to let B&B meet dd. Mr. B was curious. He sniffed and looked and listened. Thankfully, he didn’t paw at her.
Ms. B acted like a big sister would: she checked dd out, then subsequently ignored her. Through the night, she started warming up to her. I think its just going to take her some time.
We found out that dd is definitely my daughter. Same awful sleeping habits (so far). She was up almost more than she was asleep. Diaper, hunger, burp, ghosts. I think we might end up looking into buying or renting a bassinet for a little bit. As soon as we picked her up, she’d fall asleep (as she’s doing right now). Maybe she just missed us. Maybe 3 day olds aren’t wired for sleep yet. Only time will tell.
Today is the day she will, weather permitting, get to see the town. It stormed last night, so hopefully mother nature will give us a break. wish us luck.
Looking at our baby girl here, I still can’t believe it. We’re parents. We created life. We have to pay for college.
Its just so damn cool. This little swaddled girly grrrrrl in my arms will be the source of so much joy, fun, anger, fear and frustration over the coming years. Our once glorious heads of hair will become gray with each hurdle crossed. But for each gray hair; each wrinkle; each heart attack; our heart will grow one more size as it swells with love and pride. The Grinch ain’t got nothing on us.
